If I had my way, and I’m sure others feel the same, Ford would dial back

If I had my way, and I’m sure others feel the same, Ford would dial back its styling about 40 years, return the 300 cubic-inch straight-six back to the F-150’s engine lineup, and dust off the column-mounted three-speed manual. We could all tool around like Uncle Jesse, confident in knowing we made a solid buying decision. As our need for fancy driver’s aids and entertainment systems and seats that do everything but propose marriage fade into hazy recollections, our only gripe would be the stickiness of the vinyl bench seat on hot, un-air conditioned days. Okay, enough of this fantasy, as it’s never going to happen. Not possible. Automakers are addicted to pickup truck revenue, and consumers are only too happy to play the enabler, topping up those coffers ever higher thanks to a never-ending thirst for more options, more features, more luxury. No longer the spartan conveyances of yesteryear, pickups have reached the point where a Ram 1500 Limited is just too limited in its cushiness. Hence the need to tack more dollars onto the MSRP so buyers can get a full suede headliner in the Ram 1500 Tungsten Edition. Over at Ford, there’s two trim levels left to go after reaching the leath...

Alibaba listing offers Hong Kong a shot at the one that got away

Back in 2013, as Alibaba grew increasingly frustrated with the listing rules of Hong Kong — the company’s first choice to host an initial public offering — its vice-chairman Joe Tsai issued a warning. “The question Hong Kong must address is whether it is ready to look forward as the rest of the world passes it by,” he wrote in a blog post. But Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) refused to budge, insisting that Alibaba’s dual-class share structure put ordinary investors at a disadvantage. And so the semi-autonomous Chinese territory missed out on the biggest IPO in history. Now the Chinese ecommerce company, which raised $25bn with a 2014 listing in New York, is re-evaluating the market it left behind, planning a secondary listing in Hong Kong that could raise as much as $20bn. The move gives HKEX, which revised its rules last year, a shot at the one that got away and a better chance of retaining its crown as the world’s top destination for IPOs. Analysts say Alibaba’s return could drive business back to Hong Kong as other Chinese tech companies listed abroad follow suit. But questions remain over Hong Kong’s liquidity and after-market performance — and whether the addition...

While gum sales have been flat, flavor and packaging innovations as well as better-for-you (BFY) and

While gum sales have been flat, flavor and packaging innovations as well as better-for-you (BFY) and functional options are opening up opportunities for growth in the gum segment.  Earlier this year, Gerrit J. Verburg Co., announced the reintroduction of three classic chewing gum brands: Black Jack, Clove and Beemans. Black Jack lays claim to being the first chewing gum brand sold in the U.S., and Beemans traces its history back to the 1800s when it was promoted as a digestive aid. Undoubtedly, the manufacturer is banking on consumers embracing the nostalgia of the products. Time will tell if it can create movement in a segment that traditionally does not experience sales spikes.  Overall gum dollar sales at c-stores for the 52 weeks ending Dec. 30, 2018, totaled $10.4 billion, up 1.5% over the previous year, according to research firm IRI. Sugarless gum fared best with $862 million in dollar sales, up 3.1%. Regular gum saw dollar sales of $182 million, down 5.7%.  A March Mintel Group report on gum, mints and breath fresheners described the market as “softening,” partially because consumers are no longer attracted to the fresh-breath message in the modern retail environment. It’s probably clear to a Hackaday reader that we live in a golden era for hobbyist

It’s probably clear to a Hackaday reader that we live in a golden era for hobbyist tool accessibility. Cheap single board computers can be bought at any neighborhood RadioShack or Maplin. 3D printers sell fully assembled and ready to run for less than $200. Even the humble CNC mill has come down the price curve, though as you might expect at the low end things can get pretty rough. Like a cheap 3D printer, a cheap mill tends to be missing some basic features you’d expect any reasonable machine to have. If you get your hands on one of these little wonders, [Shahada Abubakar] has a pair of great blog posts on the basic set of upgrades you’ll probably want to perform right out of the box. Which cheap CNC mills are we talking about? They go by a few names. Last year our own [Kristina Panos] put together a review of a shockingly inexpensive “1610” type sold by Linksprite (go take a read if you’re already considering a purchase!). The “1610” class, so named for it’s 16 cm x 10 cm bed size, is pretty common under a wide variety of manufacturer names. You can find them in this size made of 8020 like [Kristina] did or as “upgraded” versions cut from 1/4″ mystery plastic (often referred t...

Klevv CRAS C700 RGB NVMe M.2 SSD Launched With Full On RGB

I never thought this day would come where RGB made its way onto NVME SSD. Klevv announced the launch CRAS C700 RGB NVMe M.2 SSD. This new SSD utilizes a PCIe 3.0 4x interface through the NVMe 1.3 protocol. This enables up to 1500MB/s read and 1300MB/s write speeds. The SSD also included RGB lighting with a gem like design that can be controlled via the motherboard.  This SSD comes in at 120GB, 240GB, and 480GB which is quite small and I would have liked to see a 1TB or 960GB version. They have decided to use SLC caching, which means performance will certainly be slower in more data-heavy operations, in the event that the SLC cache overflows. If you were using an NVME SSD for data-heavy operations, I would recommend going for a Samsung 970 series SSD for its raw performance. The lighting is controlled through 8 individually addressable RGB LEDs that can be controlled through almost every motherboard’s RGB software. The LEDs are behind a gem like a defuser similar to the Adata Spectrix D60 RGB RAM. They also said that the SSD uses 10-layer PCB for “better data integrity”, as well as a 27 percent reduction in temperature due to their heat sink design. The SSD also offers its S.M.A...

That wouldn’t be the Chicago way. After the “double doink” kick, in which the ball bounced off the left upright and then the crossbar, fans blamed the kicker for ruining “Da Bears’” season and called for him to be fired. Less than a week later, more than 100 novices lined up on a snowy Saturday to try to kick a football 43 yards, a stunt arranged by Anheuser-Busch InBev-owned local brewer Goose Island, fueled by the chance to win Super Bowl tickets. Every attempt was a glorious miss. That’s Chicagoans for you: They take a sour moment and turn it into a thing of meme-worthy glory—and they do it in the freezing cold. “Chicago at its best has this humanity, and it has a bit of hustle,” says Tom O’Keefe, a co-founder of Chicago agency O’Keefe Reinhard & Paul. “So mu...

Water leaves the Berkeley Pit for first time in 37 years | Local

Cloudy skies with a few showers this afternoon. Thunder possible. High 53F. Winds NNE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 30%.. The lined basin is where water from the Berkeley Pit and contaminated Horseshoe Bend water land before some of it heads to the water treatment plant and some of it heads to a pump house. Pipe that is 24 inches travels all around the mine carrying waste water to Yankee Doodle Tailings Impoundment.  Pictured is the control room of a brand-new pump house built to pump millions of gallons of contaminated water to Yankee Doodle Tailings Impoundment. The 24-inch pipe can be seen in the distance along one of the mine haul roads. The new pipe system is part of Montana Resources and Atlantic Richfield Company’s new mine waste water treatment system. The new 800-horsepower engines in the pump house and booster station were custom built and made of special stainless steel that wouldn’t corrode when in contact with the pit’s highly acidic water. Pictured is one of the stainless steel pumps Montana Resources recently had custom built to send the contaminated water 700 feet to Yankee Doodle Tailings Impoundment. This is the first time since 1982 that a...

Home networking explained, part 3: Taking control of your wires

Editors’ note: This post is part of a regularly updated series. For the other parts, check out the related stories below. All home networks start with a network cable. Even if you plan on using all wireless clients, in most cases you will still need at least one cable to connect the wireless router and the broadband modem. A typical home network needs more than that because chances are you also want to connect a few Ethernet-ready devices to the router. Knowing how to make your own networking cable is an important, handy skill for a few reasons. First, network cables that you buy at the store are generally grossly overpriced: a 7-foot-long cable can run you $20, almost $3 per foot. Secondly, it’s hard to find a ready-made cable that’s just the perfect length; most of the time it’s either too long or too short. When you make your own, the cable will be exactly the length you want, and if it’s not, well, you can make another one or adjust it. You can also make other hardware parts for the network, including network wall ports and patch panels. As you will see after reading this post, this is a skill that’s not only easy to learn, but it doesn&#...
